The clockwise~anticlockwise Dancer

TSS - This popular illusion video is most often used as an “either/or test” of “left vs. right” brain people: “If an observer perceives the dancer spinning clockwise, they are a ‘right-brain’ person, and if counterclockwise, ‘left-brained’ person.” The squiggle sense smells trouble in such two-valued distinctions. We propose a different perspective, which emphasizes the important point, that even though people usually do perceive one direction more easily (their intrinsic dynamics), with effort most people have the capacity to see the dancer moving in both directions. And with practice, they can intentionally ‘switch’ the direction they perceive. This capacity for the human brain to switch dynamically between two stable and yet and complementary behavioral patterns lies at the heart of the complementary nature. The explanation for how and why the brain does this lies at the heart of coordination dynamics, the science of the complementary nature. And the realization, act and appreciation of this back~forth switching between perceived directions is an example of the squiggle sense in action!
